Accretion-powered Millisecond Pulsar Outbursts

چکیده

The population of accretion-powered millisecond pulsars (AMSPs) has grown rapidly over the last four years, with the discovery of six new examples to bring the total sample to seven. While the first six discovered are transients active for a few weeks every two or more years, the most recently-discovered source HETE J1900.1−2455, has been active for more than 8 months. We summarise the transient behaviour of the population to estimate long-term time-averaged fluxes, and equate these fluxes to the expected mass transfer rate driven by gravitational radiation in order to constrain the distances. We also estimate an upper limit of 6 kpc to the distance of IGR J00291+5934 based on the non-detection of bursts from this source.

The Luminosity and Energy Dependence of Pulse Phase Lags in the Accretion-Powered Millisecond Pulsar Sax

Soft phase lags, in which X-ray pulses in lower energy bands arrive later than pulses in higher energy bands, have been observed in nearly all accretion-powered millisecond pulsars, but their origin remains an open question. In a study of the 2.5 ms accretion-powered pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658, we report that the magnitude of these lags is strongly dependent on the accretion rate. During the brigh...

A Double Outburst from IGR J00291+5934: Implications for Accretion Disk Instability Theory

The accretion-powered millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 underwent two ∼10 day long outbursts during 2008, separated by 30 days in quiescence. Such a short quiescent period between outbursts has never been seen before from a neutron star X-ray transient. X-ray pulsations at the 599 Hz spin frequency are detected throughout both outbursts. For the first time, we derive a pulse phase model that c...

Neutron Stars in Microquasars

We discuss the “basic” condition for an accreting neutron star to become a microquasar, i.e. ejecting relativistic particles orthogonal to the accretion disk instead of confining disk-material down to the magnetic poles and creating the two emitting caps typical for a X-ray pulsar. Jet creation is prevented for B≥ 10 G independent of the accretion rate. This excludes the possibility for a class...

A Search for Millisecond-pulsar Radio Emission from the Faint Quiescent Soft X-ray Transient 1h 1905+000

Transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs) switch between an accretion-powered state without radio pulsations and a rotation-powered state with radio pulsations. In the former state, they are X-ray bright, in the latter Xray dim. Soft X-ray transients (SXTs) undergo similar switches in X-ray, between “high” states with bright X-ray outbursts and a “low” state of quiescence. The upper limit on the...
